Malaysian actress Dato’ Michelle Yeoh rose to popularity for her roles in Hong Kong action films in the early 1990s. She also impressed Western audiences when portraying Wai Lin in 1997 James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies and Yu Shu Lien in martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), which earned her various nominations, including BAFTA Film Award for Best Actress, Golden Horse Award for Best Actress and Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress. According to People magazine, she was ranked as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1997 and as the only Asian actress listed in the 35 All-Time Screen Beauties in 2009.
BEFORE FAMEWhen she was four, she got involved in ballet and then entered the Royal Academy of Dance in London to study ballet. However, after beginning choreography and other arts due to a spinal injury, she graduated with a B.A. degree in Creative Arts with a minor in Drama. She became the Miss Malaysia beauty pageant in 1983 and then representing Malaysia, she won the Queen of the Pacific 1983 beauty pageant and in Australia and the 1983 Miss World pageant in London. Since then, she made her first appearances in action and martial arts films.
